Do you want to go tankless? Tankless Waterheaters are a wonderful invention and although they're not that common in North America right now a lot of other geographic areas are readily supplied with them and when in comparison with the usual type we're used to they're definitely a whole lot better. This is because both types rely on completely different methods of heating the water and I'll be explaining those two a bit in this hub.

Traditional water heaters heat a whole lot of water and then try to keep this mass of water at that hot temperature. The two main problems here are that a lot of energy is wasted trying to get a big mass of water on temperature and then more energy is wasted to keep that water hot.

This method gives us major disadvantages if we use the heater, because first of all the mass of water is finite and once we used it all there's no more hot water for a few hours. If we take a bath or a long shower and there are other people around wanting to use hot water they'll have to wait, and this is bad, of course. And if we go on vacation the heater still wastes energy keeping the water hot, which is completely useless.

Modern tankless heaters do not have tanks, i.e. they do not store hot water at all, so they're far smaller and less bulky and they take up less space. They actually work by heating the water "on the fly" while you're using it so that only as much energy is converted into heat as is actually needed, and no more water is standing around waiting to be used.

These types use far less energy and can deliver an infinite supply of hot water for you since they don't rely on previously heated water but do so immediately as you want them to.

They come in a variety of types, be it gas-heating, electric heating, etc, but they generally consume far less energy and are therefore more environmentally friendly than any other type of heater you could have at home right now.

Retro fitting a home for a tankless water heater can be expensive. Its a no brainer for new construction.
